I woke up gasping, my body drenched in sweat. My heart pounded against my ribs, the echoes of my mother’s screams still ringing in my ears. The nightmare had felt so real, as it always did—the blood, the gunshots, the terror clawing at my throat. My breathing was ragged, uneven, as I forced myself to take in my surroundings.
